With pure materials, comes pure inspiration.

'There is no substitute for the beauty of pure, raw and natural materials.'

The spark of creativity

Raw materials speak for themselves. They tell a story; where they started, how they got here, where they finish up. Letting this story spill through into our designs is a big part of what we do. We believe good design should allow you to touch, to feel, to sense the journey of each piece, to see how rich the materials are.

When we pick up a piece of timber, a feather, a fern, a length of leather, there is always a spark of inspiration. Something that lights a path towards the final design. Pure or raw materials reflect a direct connection to the Earth and give us a sense of the many layers and beauty of nature.  They enrich our experience of an object, making it alive.

Nature is incredible. When we look at natural forms and organisms, at their structures, their forms, their composition, there is an inherent design process that is exemplary. There are patterns, textures, colours and sounds. The world is alive, and when you are exposed to Nature’s space or creations, a button is switched on inside you creating this amazing feeling of being complete. You seem to connect to everything, to yourself.

This is what we are looking for when we begin a design process. Something inherent in the material that makes us come alive. That lets the design speak for itself. We find that pure and raw materials have the quality to create that connection back to Nature. And a way of initiating the creation process.

Our modern lives rarely allow us to spend extended periods of time where we are at one with nature at all times. So when we cannot be in nature, we want to bring Nature closer to us, to our family and yours.

Senses and connection

When we look at Nature we can see how easily she has designed and made organisms and structures which are so perfectly beautiful with all their differences. There are patterns, textures, colours and sounds, it is alive and when you are exposed to Nature’s space or creations a button is switched on inside you creating this amazing feeling of being complete. You seem to connect to everything, to yourself.

We find that pure and raw materials have that quality to create that connection back to Nature and in that way switching that button on to that feeling of being complete and free. That's the feeling we want inside our houses when we cannot be in Nature. We want to bring Nature closer to us, our family and to you.

FLOW Side Table

Creativity without costing the earth

Nature is the ultimate recycler. Trees are broken down back into earth, dead animals feed forests, and glass returns to line white sand beaches. Life after life, natural materials are recycled back into the ongoing cycle of our planet.

We believe that we have a duty to walk lightly on the earth. To make sure that what we leave behind can be a part of that ongoing cycle. Furthermore, we believe we must try and play an active role in sustaining our planet. To that end where we use man-made products, we try and upcycle as much as possible as well as giving recycled products another life.

Even with our natural materials we try and repurpose as many as possible, making as little an impact on our living planet as we can. Using reclaimed timber is therefore a big part of our design process. Reclaimed Kauri is warm and rich in tone, and the repurposed river Rimu in our FLOW Collection is both strong and beautiful. Our focus on using these materials means we don’t need to consider felling living trees. We only have one planet, and we seek to maintain her abundance as well as reflect her majesty in our luxurious designs.

"I find designing with pure, raw and sustainable materials a real pleasure and it really stirs my soul.  My hope is that the process of turning these raw materials into rich, beautiful objects will stir your soul in return."
